Being Peace (Being Peace, #1)

An introduction to Buddhism, but also a quality outline for meditation, mindfulness, and conflict resolution.
I found his comments about being mindful of others' suffering and doing what we can to alleviate it remarkable. I thought of the state of the world. I thought about Palestine. Then, I also was struck by his instruction that those who oppress are also deserving of our compassion—not to our allowance of the behavior, but as a means of recognition that we, too, are susceptible to (and guilty of) being the oppressors.
America is somehow a closed society. Americans are not very aware of what is going on outside of America. Life here is so busy that even if you watch television and read the newspaper, and the images from outside flash by, there is no real contact. [But] if we get in touch with the suffering in the world and are moved by that suffering, we may come forward to help the people who are suffering, and our own suffering may just vanish.

Quotes Rebecca Liked

“Sometimes things occur beneath the surface that will eventually explode, and by then it is too late to deal with them, so the only recourse is to divorce or fight or even kill each other. To meditate is to be aware of what is going on in yourself, your feelings, your body, your perceptions, your family. The second technique is to recall, and the more details which the community has, the easier it is to help.”
