The House of the Seven Gables

This is a book that I always thought I should read. I know lots of students read it in high school, but as an English teacher today I couldn't imagine doing it. Do the sins of the father punish the next generations? The story is interesting, but the constant description, bogged it down. I appreciate Hawthorne, enjoyed The Scarlet Letter, and do teach his short stories Rapaccini's Daughter and Dr. Heidegger's Experiment (both great October "mad scientist" stories), but this novel is more suited to American Literature scholars.
