“Maybe we will drown or burn or starve one day, but until then we get to choose if we’ll add to that destruction or if we will care for each other.
“There is such peril in loving things at all, and he feels sort of proud, in fact, that he just keeps on doing it.
There is such emotional peril in reading a Charlotte McConaghy novel, but I just keep on doing it because they just hurt so good. This was such a poignant exploration of the love and appreciation of nature and wildlife, the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love, finding space for love and joy even at the end of the world and even at the risk that you’ll lose it all, the ways we work through our trauma, and second chances.
McConaghy has an incredible talent for crafting emotional stories with stellar writing and a compelling mystery throughline that keeps you hooked in the story. I can’t wait to keep reading everything she write for forever.
