This is a 3-star book, but I was in a 4-star mood when I read it and so had a lot of fun. It's interesting as a bit of historical pulp. Light, dumb, fun. Fast-paced, but not especially well-structured or well-written. At times I thought it was working best when it was at it's most mundane - as a travelogue, or a cultural catalog of quick descriptive summaries of 19th century cities and regions.
