3⭐️ Welcome back to another episode of “Did I like the book or was it just narrated by Julia Whelan?� Spoiler alert: this one was all Julia!
Truly, this was a beautiful, cozy, lovely story that I sadly just did not care about one little bit.
In THE STORY SHE LEFT BEHIND we’re back in 1952 where we meet Clara and her darling daughter Winnie. When Clara gets a call that a handwritten dictionary full of her long lost mother’s made-up language was discovered in England she and Winnie make the trip abroad to learn whatever they can about the woman who disappeared nearly 25 years ago.
The prose is lovely and the setting is honestly immaculate. I love being transported to England (especially via Julia’s voice) and the Lake District is exactly where I want to be right now.
This book took me well over ten days to read because I would listen to a few chapters before bed every night. It was like a soothing little bed time story and for that I am grateful.
There’s honestly nothing wrong with this one - it just wasn’t for me! It’s charming but slow and the ending just didn’t feel worth the investment of time it took to get there.
