I was clutching my pearls at first, not yet prepared to fully embrace the hilarity of this, given the story's backdrop, but before I knew it, I was in the throes of it all. The jokes were a bit dark but well-executed. The characters are a bit flat, leaning more on the side of caricatures, but I think that might have been purposeful - adding the comedy. At first, I was just here for the fast-paced plot and the punchlines, but in the end, my heart was very attached to the characters. I highlighted so many insane jokes and punchlines, but this one takes the cake:
““What bait spying shit is this? said a girl from East London. The familiarity of her accent drained the tension from my body. There’s nothing scary about a hijabi rude girl from Mile End. This about an ISIS bride in a detention camp in Iraq is nutsssss. However, the author has so much personal experience and expertise in Iraq and, with aid work, to deliver the right comedic timing.
