This book is just awful. I feel sorry for their kids. If you’re hoping for a thoughtful exploration of non-monogamy, introspection on marriage and capitalism (the real reason these two stay married), insight into jealousy and what it means- you will not find it here. This is a memoir of a woman whose life is lacking in meaning and purpose. She decides to try and find that meaning by having lots of sex and then over intellectualizes it by trying to make it about “an open marriage. Sex is her hobby. She doesn’t really have any others so she’s pretty boring. She writes so graphically (and badly) about the sex you will cringe. Did I mention how badly I feel for their kids? Oh - and she also tries to race shift to make her online dating profile more interesting. All of it is great fodder for thoughtful analysis and introspection, which, sadly, is completely lacking.
Also, her husband is just the worst.

If you want to read something just as difficult that tackles the same subject matter check out All Fours, Miranda July’s auto fiction account of her own affair (real or imagined) at midlife, and her puzzled search for meaning. Also a difficult read, but in a good way.
