The Flanders Road

A beautifully written tough read of internal monologues and long, long sentences. There are moments of brilliant, immersive prose.
Georges reviews the circumstances of his captain’s death in 1940. Georges saw his captain shot off his horse by a German sniper. Georges reflects on the past and a number of incidents and memories are recalled. First in the company of a fellow prisoner in a POW camp and years later in meeting the captain’s widow, Corrine. Corrine had a pre war affair with the jockey Iglesic, who would become the captain’s orderly.
This book was first published in French in 1960. The author won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1985.
