“I would get my money’s worth out of my little rat lifespan, and I would leave the earth happy to have been there.

We Could Be Rats tells the story of two sisters, who despite growing up under the same house, they had two completely different life paths. Despite being best friends throughout their childhood, as they got older they drifted further and further apart. This book digs into what caused the rifts and what is bringing them back together, all while unpacking the tangled threads of childhood nostalgia, growing up, and the sobering realization that neither people nor life are ever as perfect as we once believed.

This is one of those books that I have a hard time capturing my thoughts on it without having to trauma dump on the internet. When I say I ugly cried, I mean I ugly cried, multiple times, and not all for sad reasons. It’s raw, deeply introspective, and brimming with those moments where feelings I’ve had locked away were suddenly put so perfectly on paper.

Henry beautifully captures that bittersweet moment when you realize your childhood magic has dimmed, or the day you wake up and see the cracks in the adults you once thought were flawless. I think this story will hit hardest for those with siblings, and yet I still believe it's a story for everyone. Because let’s face it: we’ve all had to grow up, deal with things we wished we hadn't had to, and that quiet yearning for the simplicity of childhood never really fades.

Obviously, I highly recommend this one. It's also a short read, less than 300 pages, but those pages are certainly gut-wrenching at times.

I will note to check for content warnings, a lot of difficult topics covered here, with the largest one being suicide. Protect your peace 🫶🏻

Disclaimer: I received an Advanced Uncorrected Proof from Simon and Schuster Canada.

as an eldest sister with control issues that grew up in a small town, this one hit a little too close to home.

evidenced by the multiple times I ugly cried while reading it.
