The Covenant of Water

700+ pages. Way too long. I felt that varghese was staging another epic in the same vein as cutting for stone which was excellent. But this lacked characters I could really care about. I wasn’t upset when characters died and new ones entered. It felt well meaning like a biblical story but untilmately contrived and drawn out. I disliked the introduction of Digby’s character complete with lengthy backstory only to have him disappear for 500 pages of the book until the end - having him placed there to engineer the heart wrenching finale of the girl reunited with her presumed dead mother. The ending was indeed sweet and intriguing but it was not enough to carry the weight of this book. I’d have given up half way through if it wasn’t the only book I’d bought with me on holiday.
