The best parts of this novel were the descriptions of Kabul in the 70's. At times the realism betrayed the fact that this was in fact a work of fiction.
The parts that didn't work much for me where attempts to 'ratchet up the evil' on the protagonist. Not only a Taliban leader, but also a junkie and a pederast? A bit much, but villan for sure-
