Probably more like 3 1/2 stars. It was a really nice easy read, and the writing was beautiful. After reading The Mesmerist, which was pretty clunky in its writing style, picking this up was like drinking a smooth wine after a bottle of plonk. At first I just noticed how the author paints such clear pictures of character using narration and description - very shapr - and that after a while I didn't even notice the writing, which to me is what good writing is all about. She just brought the world to life so vividly. Circus life in depression-era America is very interesing and I had a lot of sympathy for the characters. the structure was great - I can't think what is holding me back from gving this more stars - although I think it might be the simple (yet intangible) x-factor. Certainly a well-wrtten, enjoyable read.
