it was amazing

4.5.

I鈥檓 still very undecided about where I鈥檓 going to leave this rating it鈥檚 very much in the middle between a four and a five, four seems too low but five seems too high .

This is my second book by this author, and although it鈥檚 been a long time since I read her other book I remember it fondly and know that it captivated me enough that I recommended it to a few people at the time.

There are actually quite a few similarities thinking back on it, the last book was about a woman whose job it was to find missing people. She was basically a private detective that specialized in missing children and from what I remember she had some sort of a knack for it and was able to close multiple cases that had been unsolved until she had taken them on. I think I even remember her developing some sort of close relationship with a child, I don鈥檛 remember if it was one of the missing children or if the child had a separate story but In this book our MC is an adopted child who learned that she had a brother from her biological mother late after she is already an adult and she sets off looking for more information about her brother鈥榮 life. She happens to become acquainted with a former policeman that presently resides in the same town where her brother was sent to live in a child鈥檚 home who is himself in the midst of grieving the loss of his late wife. They develop a very sweet, father daughter-esque type relationship and she enlists his help in tracking down the people from her brother鈥檚 past life that might have stories that can help her fill in the blanks and paint a full picture of her brother鈥檚 life. It very quickly becomes obvious as they start asking questions and finding links, that her brother endured horrific abuse while being treated in the boys home, and that there are still people living that mean to prevent these secrets from getting out.

I really enjoyed myself with this read and was hooked from the beginning, although I will admit that I did see the ending coming from a mile away but even so I was chomping at the bit to see the way it would all play out. Although the book was on the shorter end, I thought the characters were fleshed out in such a realistic and endearing way, each character hinted at so much more without leaving us feeling unmoored, Denefeld allowed us the space to form their histories in our own minds after nudging us gently in a ditection. Denefeld鈥檚 characters were surely this book鈥檚 strong suit.

I really wanted to give this a five just based on my enjoyment but I have to pause & make the distinction between a 4.5 and a 5 because I am trying to make a point of going back to my earlier rating methods, where I was much stingier with my 5 star ratings And reserved them for only my most absolute favorites, this also allows for more flexibility between the lower start rating as I almost never use the 1 & 2 star ratings.

Cher 'N Books I hate when books fall in between whole stars for ratings, lol! Glad to see you have had such a wonderful read so early in the year, Jen.

Lisa I love this novel too! I think Denfeld is a wonderful and underappreciated writer.
