i mean, what can i say. it’s the hunger games. i wouldn’t consider myself a superfan—which is why the rating is lower—but i am obsessed with the movies. and i have read the first hunger games book twice? it’s pretty clear i’m not qualified to be judging this book. hear me out though.
the beginning was a bit slow. it took me a while to get through all the prep for the games. i was hoping there’d be more twists and that’d it be more fast paced. i was getting a bit disappointed, i found myself making excuses not to read this, but then i remembered i’d never get to the exciting part—the actual hunger games.
i’m definitely not the first to say this. everything was so short lived? the death scenes that were supposed to have me a sobbing mess were completely looked over. yes, there was recognition that someone had died and a quick little moment of grief from haymitch…then the next page—it’s like it never happened. i get it, haymitch, you have priorities. but come on!! someone just got absolutely torn to shreds, and i’m, for some reason, not crying. i want to cry!!! the words written on the page simply lacked emotion. there’s no other way to explain it.
the rest of my complaints i can’t quite explain. i was honestly expecting a lot more from this. it seems to be more of a me-problem, seeing that everyone else was obsessed with this. i think if i had actually finished the entire hunger games series as well as the ballad of songbirds and snakes that i would have enjoyed this more.
that’s enough negativity from me. i am truly not trying to steer people away from this book, it’s good!! suzanne collins knows what she’s doing. i’m just disappointed i didn’t personally experience it the same way everyone else did.
with all that said, i definitely didn’t regret reading this. i loved getting to know more about haymitch and his background, he was always such a mysterious character. but what i’m most excited for, the movie adaptation. i’ve watched all the movies. the ballad of songbirds and snakes, being the most recent, has stuck with me longer than i thought it would—i’m constantly rewatching scenes. so, don’t take my review too seriously. this was still well-written and enjoyable. so excited to see what else she may put out in the future years!
