mythology fantasy books are my favorite kind of fantasy books. but this is my first time reading a story based in norse mythology and let me tell you what. i loved it!

i enjoyed the characters and how their straightforward way of life was the perfect stage for a story about gods, prophecy, and gaining power. the magic system is explained well, makes each character interesting and serves a purpose. DLJs writing is also pretty superb. the narrative has good pacing and there were never any lulls in the story. and im a sucker for “forced proximity�� romance plots. so the connection between freya and bjorn was exactly my kind of thing.

so, if this is so great, how come im only giving it 4 stars? because i never got the feeling that i couldnt put this down. this isnt a book that i would sacrifice sleep to stay up and read. it just didnt have that quality that fully grabbed me and pulled me in, feeling so immersed in the story that i didnt want to leave and stop reading. not sure why, but that feeling just wasnt there.

but i still really enjoyed this and this is definitely a series i am looking forward to continuing!
