wow—haymitch i love you. being back in this world felt so nostalgic and emotional for me. i feel like a piece of me will always be with these books.

i loved seeing haymitch as a younger man and his games. the amount of times i cried while reading this book because he deserved so much better was absurd. i loved the way he bonded with the people from the other districts and his friendship with maysilee. speaking of maysilee, why was she my favorite character?! i cannot wait for when this is filmed and she gets so many edits.

the expansion on lucy grays story was so fun to read! i love how we also got to learn more about snow and his relationship with her even after she disappeared. i thought it was also interesting how they showed more about the covey and it’s nature.

the games were so entertaining and haymichs’s move in the end? ICONIC! seriously, the edits once this movie comes out will be revolutionary.

my only complaint is that the book feels very much like a prequel written after the original trilogy came out. by this I mean it’s very obvious suzzane collins did not already have this all thought out. and while that is normal, tbosas felt very smooth with the original books because of how she used the foreshadowing in the original books and built on it. for example, for lenore to be such a large part of haymitch’s character in this story, you would think she would be mentioned or at least referenced a tad in the original books—but she’s not. nevertheless, I still loved this book and haymitch and would most definitely recommend it!!
