** spoiler alert **
2.5 stars
yeah i really don’t know what happened. i LOVED the first book, it was truly excellent and most definitely a five star read. this one though?? i’m actually shocked at how much i STRUGGLED to finish it.
it started off very strong and engaging, much like the first book. i found it interesting to read how shannon’s family dynamic shifted after the ending of the first book, and her navigating her life and relationship with johnny.
but somewhere towards the middle it just got…so boring? like it was still fun but it felt extremely long and almost repetitive. also a good majority of their interactions had to do with sex. like a LOT of it. usually i don’t mind but it was absolutely excessive, and i was definitely rolling my eyes, cringing, and skipping multiple chapters out of sheer boredom. like i know they’re teenagers in love but come ON.
also not to mention they were very codependent with each other. shannon i can forgive considering her background, but johnny’s entire world became revolved around her. like what happened to his big dreams of being a professional rugby player??
the ending chapters of the book picked up a little and the plot twist was…something. i mean it definitely sparked my interest back up, but it also seemed like a convenient, traumatic way for shannon to finally escape her situation. also them being placed permanently with johnny’s family was kinda wild ngl.
overall though, it was definitely not as good as the first book, which is surprising considering how high this one was rated. it would have honestly been perfect if it were 200 pages shorter.
