Tigana, where to begin, I had a heard a lot of this book but chose to read it with an open mind, I expected it to be epic, emotional, action packed and serious. Whilst the action was lacking it certainly featured the other themes as well one which I did not expect; melancholy. This novel conveys a genuine sense of sadness and a lot of it, a character pretty much 'weeps' in every chapter and though it gives you a good feel for the times in which the protagonists are living and the scale of the oppression in this world.
In terms of the story telling I think the book could have been about 200 pages shorter, whilst the author has built up plot themes gradually with some excellent surprises and jaw dropping revelations throughout the book, I felt on the whole the prose was slightly too slow during the middle of the book. There is also a grey area with regards to any animosity towards the antagonist, centred primarily upon the love story between the main Tyrant and and enslaved woman with ulterior motives. The characters are all given a plethora of back story (which adds heavily to the page count) however I could not fully get behind the hero's despite attempting to throughout the read and to the point where I was rooting for one of the antagonists and I don't think this was purposely done by the Author.
All in all this was worth the read and was good reading. If you want a an epic story with an almost perfect set of good guys, two powerful bad buys and a lot of emotion then this is certainly worth the read. I think this is perhaps one of those novels that I will improve after a re-read. I would give this 3.5 stars if I could.
