** spoiler alert **
A brilliant and beautiful read for anyone who loves humanity, and who'd like to fight for the love of humanity against the evil of despair and hopelessness, against "the sword that has been unsheated for its own sake".
"Hundreds of thousands of people murdered in the morning, the terrible prison walls, a Europe where the earth steams with the corpses of millions of its own children all of that was necessary just to obtain two or three nuances that have no other value than helping some of us die a little better. Yes, that can drive one to despair. But we must prove that we do not deserve so much injustice. That is the task we have set for ourselves, and it begins tomorrow.
On this European night, filled with the breath of summer, millions of armed and unarmed men prepare for battle. The day is dawning when you will finally be defeated. I know that the heavens, which watched your horrific victory with indifference, will receive your rightful defeat just as indifferently. Even today, I expect nothing from them. But at the very least, we will have contributed to saving the creature of solitude in which you sought to imprison it. Because you have despised this loyalty to humanity, you will now die alone by the thousands.
Now I can bid you farewell."
It appears Camus' wisdom is eternal, and sadly his message still has to be spread far and wide in this time of rising nationalism.
