Sunrise on the Reaping (The Hunger Games, #0.5)

As soon as I opened this book, I got scared. How could it possibly live up to the previous four books? Would it do Haymitch justice? Would it just feel like a gratuitous money-making prequel?
I needn’t have worried. Suzanne Collins is a mastermind. I have not felt so traumatized finishing a book since Mockingjay, except this time there’s the addition of the loss of the love of his life. OH, that hit hard. I think I was cheering through the first third of the book (the characters! The backstory! The puzzle pieces all falling into place so perfectly, and suddenly so much makes sense that didn’t before!), then waiting with bated breath through the middle third, and then just straight sobbing through the last third. I have so much to think about now. So much.
