really liked it

This was a cool mix of historical fiction, horror, and psychological drama that grips the reader from the first page. Based on the real-life Franklin Expedition of 1845, which vanished while searching for the Northwest Passage, this is a chilling tale of survival, desperation, and the unknown.

At over 700 pages, the novel is a slow burn, and it’s this slowness that drops it to 4stars for me, but his detailed prose really does immerse you in the icy world and slowly builds a sense of dread. The characters are complex, grappling not only with the external threats of cold, starvation, and isolation, but with internal demons and interpersonal tensions.

Though dense at times, and perhaps overly descriptive for readers who prefer a faster-paced narrative, I’m glad I stuck with it - it rewards patience with a story that is as emotionally resonant as it is frightening. It’s not just a horror novel; it hits on endurance, culture, and the limits of human control.

Rating: 4/5 A chilling, intelligent, and unforgettable reading experience, albeit a touch too long/dense/slow in places for me.

KDS His three main historical novels (altho there are a few more lesser ones) are all very rich in detail and researched history. I know they're not considered rapid page turners and I don't normally like this kind of density either, but the authenticity, the little easter eggs and the reality of the horror struck me pretty hard
