Reviews saying Cassandra Khaw wrote this with a thesaurus in her hand aren't far off. Some really obscure vocabulary in this. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I enjoyed it, and I found it added to the otherworldly feeling.
What I did dislike was the some of the sentence structure. Things felt oddly put together so I found myself having to reread each line to understand what the hell was being said. I found it easier as I read more, either because I got used to it or because I stopped caring about fully understanding what I read.
I loved how gruesome and disturbing this was. It was horrific in a way recent modern horror I've read hasn't been. I did find the epilogue a disappointment. The book would have been better served without it included.
