She Who Became the Sun (The Radiant Emperor, #1)

Profoundly disappointing in every respect - in its allegedly nuanced gender explorations that to me feel reductive, othering, and gender essentialist, and as in its inexplicably unfinished and slapdash plotting with unexplained random “magic and “visible ghosts which invite but never receive explanation, as in the selfish, murderous, sociopathic narcissism of the main character. Avoid. It’s just not good, even if the first few chapters seem like the book will be good. It isn’t. Two stars is generous. Much like the movie “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon it leaves me wondering at the positive comments and praise, and feeling shortchanged and irked.
