The Black Tides of Heaven (Tensorate, #1)

I liked this book but didn’t love it, and I definitely could have loved it.
It starts off pretty good and for the first half I was kind of along for the ride. I liked the gender exploration and how it wasn’t made into a big deal, but it still was a large part of the identity of the main characters. I thought it really showed how who they were had been so intertwined that they had to figure out who each was on their own. And ostensibly, this is where the story kicks off.
However, I felt like it never really did kick off. This book bills itself as a novella, and while it’s too long for that, it also was really too short for what it tried to do. I think that had it been longer, the writing style really would have worked for me, but without more information the fairytale/myth like style just left me feeling like too much was glossed over (especially since I was incredibly interested in it!). It looks like you have to read more of the books to really get a complete tale, and I don’t really want to have to do that (though honestly, I think had this one been longer I would have wanted to read more, so that’s weird). Writing was good, setting was amazing, so I will check out more by this author, just maybe look for some books that bill themselves as full length.
