I really wanted to like this, and I liked the writing style quite a bit, but I just did not leave feeling like I had any idea what was going on. Even when I would think I was following and I was interested, all the sudden I would need to rewind the audiobook to try to figure out what I was missing (the answer was nothing, it just really didn't work for me). I honestly thought I was dumb, but I've read plenty of other reviews that felt the same way. There was just some plotting elements that were completely missed. And I don't think it came down completely to language/writing style. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I appreciated what we might modernly call "code-switching" and how it reflected on who Demane was and how he perceived himself and others. But while I liked the who, and I understood the who; I felt the why was completely missing. The bones of the story were so fascinating that I keep trying to make myself like it, but I think I just have to admit it was not for me. 3 stars for entertaining me even when I didn’t get it.
