This was difficult to rate. It’s not that it was bad it really wasn’t but it also wasn’t terrific. This is the first time I’ve read something by Coco Mellors, and I really like her writing. The same cannot be said for many contemporary writers whose works I’ve read in recent times.

As someone who has a sister, I cannot even begin to imagine my life without her. How do you carry on living when someone you love and have grown up with dies? That is the question that the author centred her book around.

There was a lot to like about this book. The subject matter is dealt with gracefully. Mellors painted the three main characters (and their enigmatic mother) with such distinction that they come to life in your mind and you feel like you really know them, as they struggle with their own lives while reeling from the pain and grief of losing their sister.

Mellors writing shines in the engaging dialogue between the sisters. Avery and Lucky, the oldest and the youngest sisters, are morally grey characters, with Avery really verging on the unlikeable. Both are difficult, complex characters who are constantly butting heads. They know exactly which button to push, and they push hard.

But in the end, I finished the book feeling kind of unsatisfied. I can’t even pinpoint why I’m rating this only 3 stars tbh lol. Somehow many things happen yet not much happens. It felt more like a story about addictions, rather than a story about sisterhood. But again, definitely not a terrible book. I would still read more of her works in the future.
