While not the best writer in the world (dead or alive), I think Rowling establishes herself well in her authorial debut. She comes off as some weird, hybrid mix between Roald Dahl and L. Frank Baum. As far as children's fiction is concerned, she's a force to be reckoned with.

The thing that interests me the most with this book (and the series) is the character of Harry. I love other characters. I enjoy Hermione and Dumbledore. Ron makes me chuckle. I long for a hug as big as Hagrid's. But Harry? I don't like him, but I don't dislike him either. It's an odd feeling. A lot of those I've spoken with feel the same. I think it's because Harry is us. We see the story through his eyes. We relate to him so much that it's hard for him to be a favorite character. It'd be as if we were our own favorite person and I don't think that works in life. However, in Rowling's book, it fits perfectly. Not only is Harry a wizard, but he allows the reader to be a wizard, too. We are Harry.
