really liked it

** spoiler alert ** A witty and surprising debut novel by Jonathan Howard. Taking elements from the classic Faust story and adding some fresh twists. Howard makes no secret of the works that inspired him... peppering this book with many in-jokes and references. So much fun, when I caught them.

Johannes Cabal is a most impressive main character, a true bastard of an anti-hero. You hate to love him... or love to hate him. Horst, Johannes' vampire brother, is perfect as that moral center of the tale.

The ending was quite surprising and I imagine it will not appeal to a lot of people. I found it perfectly in tune with the story and Johannes' character, however. Honestly, I was expecting -- and dreading a wrap-it-all-up-neatly happy ending -- and was quite relieved when I didn't get one.
