Can I be honest? I read this back in school, probably in 5th or 6th grade. (At least I think I did.) I just finished it at the age of 29 and I found myself fighting to get through it. When I started it in June, I was excited but I couldn't keep up the enthusiasm past a few chapters. It was incredibly boring. It just plodded along and didn't get better. How do middle grade children get through this book? I don't think it's a classic because it truly failed to engage me. The 2 stars are for the relationship the MC had with the wild dog. That was the only part I enjoyed. Just being honest.

I remember reading this as a kid and enjoying it, but I don't actually remember anything about it...

My thoughts exactly. Had to read this as a little boy. It's almost like they wanted to teach me the all books are boring. Such a boring book, nothing eventful happens. It was like reading a books about someone watching paint dry.
Good to see that someone else understands. As a 5th grader, I loathed it. Not sure how I would feel at 35, but your review leads me to believe it would be about the same. In high school, I felt the same way about The Old Man and the Sea.
I agree. I only liked the part with her and the wild dog.
This book was FANTASTIC and I'm middle grade!
