After hearing all of the world sing the praises of this book, I thought I'd give it a shot. The consensus? I don't regret reading it, but I wouldn't recommend it.
I thought the protagonist, Liesel, was the most boring, underdeveloped character in the story; she did nothing for me. In contrast, I adored her father, Hans, and best friend, Rudy. I didn't see the point of Max, the Jewish refugee of sorts, except maybe to convince the reader this story really WAS about WW2, and not about a girl who was a borderline criminal.
I found myself bored in many places and still not enthralled with what I was reading halfway through the plot. An overrated book, in my opinion.
