It’s as if no time has passed since I last reread this book. That was probably around 10 years ago. And yeah, my old self was right. Nothing has changed, I’m still trash for this series. It’s so addicting.
I used to reread this series so many times when I didn’t have that many books at home and I was obsessed with reading my favorite series only, this one and Harry Potter. My teacher in middle school was so done with me lmao. She used to take the entire class to the library on Tuesdays and I would borrow the same books over and over again. In the end she resorted to forbidding me from borrowing any more Harry Potter books. Thinking about it now, this makes me laugh. But the thing is, this book still holds up after so many years and even now, as I’ve developed a bit of a critical (or cynical? 🙃) mind towards books.
Eragon is a slow-burn book, but it’s the kind of slow you enjoy when you care about the characters, the world and the journey. The reveals are cleverly placed throughout so you never get bored.
I thought I remembered the plot quite well, but that wasn’t exactly the case. I did remember various elements of future books though, and gasped a lot as I realized how freaking CLEVER this entire story is. Knowing that a 15 year-old wrote it is mindblowing.
Eragon’s character growth is just incredible. He starts as an impulsive poor farm boy that behaves like a total teenager, and gradually becomes someone else, but still with a process of trial and error. Knowing how the story’s going to go makes me even more aware of this fact and makes me appreciate it 10,000% more.
Because of how Eragon is at the beginning and of how he grows by the end I never thought he was anything more than a 16 year-old. It wasn’t the same with Roran or Nasuada or Murtagh. It’s so funny that at the time I thought they were adults when they’re just 17 or 18.
Now I realize I never cared for the romance with Arya. And I don’t really think it’s a romance? Eragon has a weird infatuation for her and it’s not even healthy. I guess when I was a teen it reminded me of my helpless crushes haha. But right now I wish that romance involved Murtagh instead. Imagine how GOOD and ANGSTY that would have been. Too bad they’re what they are lol.
I’m going to reread this entire series this year. Now that I know I’m still in love with it I can’t wait to get my hands on the other books. I’ve always thought the third one was my favorite but we’ll see 😁

"You’ve been drinking, came the accusing thought. Eragon considered it for a moment and had to agree that she was absolutely right. Her disapproval was clear, but all she said was, I won’t envy you in the morning.
No, groaned Eragon, but Brom will. He drank twice as much as I did.
Oh yeah, he will LOL"
