The Book Thief has left me in a state of tears like no other book ever has. It was beautiful, it was terrible, it was a book like no other.
The Book Thief takes us back in time. Back to a time that was not so long ago, where people were murdered just for having the wrong hair color. Where people were told they were going to take a shower only to remove their clothes to die.
It starts with a tragedy. Yet, this book is full of them. This book is slow moving, but that's not always a bad thing. If you move past the first ten or so pages, you will discover a book that will leave you in such a deep sadness you'll be doubled over on the floor crying. [Or maybe that's just me.] This book did not scream at me to read, read, read, every second of my life to find out what happens. Perhaps that was due to the way it was broken up, but it flowed nicely, and I enjoyed the fact that I could put the book down and not feel guilty about it. At least, until the last thirty pages or so.
This book contains a wonderful writing style. I enjoyed it almost as much as the story. The way Markus Zusak writes is so enjoyable. He doesn't give too much detail on the needless things, such as what shade of the wood the floor was. Yet, he gave wonderful details on the moments, or the things that deserved them. The best word to describe it is beautiful. Not to mention the fact that he included German in the text. Not to worry though, generally after someone speaks in German the next few words are what they had said again, yet translated in English. Although it's not too obvious until like me, you sit on google with the book and a pencil in your hand, ready to write in the translations.
I don't have too much more to say on this book, without spoiling the story for you. But I leave that part to you. If I could spoil it for you, we would be here all day. I truly hope you pick this up, have a lovely cup of tea, and enjoy. This is a book you won't soon forget.
