The Host (The Host, #1)

Some may think what I'm about to say is blasphemous, but I'll say it anyway: The Host (in some ways) is actually... better than Twilight. :L
I do love Twilight, it's like literary heroin, but I just think Meyer writes better in The Host. I hadn't anything to go on but the blurb when I started reading it - the blurb doesn't do it justice at all, honest. I was expecting a completely different book to what I got, & was pleasantly surprised.
I found it weird how the beginning was so slow, then in the middle BAM! the action begins. However it didn't really bother me; it's really engaging despite that. Seriously though, I've given it to people who've wanted to give up while reading the start; if this is or was you, keep going! Once it gets going, The Host really is brilliant.
Even though Wanda is meant to be this big tough warrior gal yet comes across as more of a wet fish (Wanda? Fish? Sorry. :L) for me Meyer managed to do the whole vulnerable-yet-strong girl thing much better here. I liked Wanda better than Bella, I must say. And though I suppose no one can really better dear Edward, Ian was a complete babe. I was really in love. Jared, not so much, but Ian's like the man version of Edward.
Say what you like about Stephenie Meyer's writing skills, but she can tell a good story, and she is good with romance. The Host is action packed and kept me on tenterhooks, and I loved the whole alien aspect of it - original, yes? I'm also really happy she actually wrote another book; I was scared she'd end up like JK Rowling, living in the shadow of her creation, afraid to write another book in case it didn't match up.
But Twilight is no Harry Potter, and hopefully Meyer will keep writing different books in the coming years.
Also, sequel anyone? 'The Soul' is apparently the name, followed by 'The Seeker'. I kinda hope it follows Wanda, but The Host finished so well I also kinda don't. Oh well, should be good anyways. & There's a movie! Whoo! It'll probably be edited (a lot), but hopefully it'll surpass the Twilight movies. If you liked Twilight but want something a bit more adult & meatier, try The Host - it should impress. (:
