I really enjoyed The Anubis Gates. I have never read anything like it before. The writing style is simple and straightforward and thank God for that because the story is so confusing at times that a different writing style might have made it incomprehensible. I had the urge to get some notecards and envelopes to visualize who was in who's body at any given time! But it wasn't frustrating, just fun! I have read some criticisms of this book, saying it is not "true steampunk" and since this is my first book in the genre, I have nothing to compare it to so I can't critique the book on it's adherence to the genre standards. This book does not take it self too seriously and it plays out kind of like a really good adventure/sci-fi. I hear it will be released as a stage play soon in London. There is some interesting history of England and Egypt and cameo appearances (yet important to the story) by real historical figures however one does not need to know the history to enjoy the book. I love the imagination and humor of Tim Powers. The Victorian settings are atmospheric and creepy as were the sinister characters but at the same time I couldn't help but chuckle....i.e Horrebin or Romany wearing their spring shoes and stilts to avoid the pain of touching the earth! Crazy Stuff! I recommend this book for anyone that enjoys a great adventure of time travel, mistaken identities, quest for immortality, loyalty and revenge, and most of all...strange magic!
