This was odd. Interesting. But odd. And not what I expected.
Brief summary - a family has purchased a new home and when they arrived after a vacation an scary family has taken it over and refuses to vacate. Then everything gets strange.
It was short, which was good for this particular story because I'm not sure it could have maintained its momentum over much longer. I was glad that I read the afterword where McMahon explained a bit of his process with this story, but there were still far too many plot holes (I would assume that most readers spent much of the book thinking, "Why don't they just......"). Fans might argue that this type of book requires a suspension of disbelief, but, frankly, that isn't clear until more than halfway through the story, so a reader can be forgiven for expecting a bit more logical thought and plotting.
I would try something else by McMahon because he's a decent writer, but not something like this.
