Classic Bova. First, you got your space stuff, an asteroid hollowed to form a space habitat, and flown out to Saturn. Next, there's an angry antagonist, two in this book, who terrorize their subordinates and all the people around them. I think the main character is Titan Alpha, a rover with the mission of exploring the surface and sending back data. Only, it has a glitch and doesn't send any data back.

(view spoiler)[In the end, it is discovered that Titan Alpha had a bug. The decontamination program was interpreted by its adaptive learning software to override its mission to protect the planet from human contamination, which it concluded would be the consequence of sending back data. This conclusion to the main plot's tension is very unsatisfying. First, its bad computer science. That's just not how computers work. The rover even had a sort of inner monologue going on, which would have been awesome if Bova had ever spent 5 minutes flipping through an effing C programming book in his life. Seriously. Second, and worst of all, it's not even logical, because the guy goes down to the planet to fix the broken rover. (hide spoiler)]

The subplot is about life in the icy rings of Saturn.

(view spoiler)[It's alien nano machines. But they don't do anything except broadcast a signal saying, "there's people here". And we don't even get to know why or how they broadcast a signal. They don't do anything except multiply under a microscope. This raises questions that weren't even considered by the characters in the book, and feels like a giant waste of a cool idea. At least there were a couple of strong female characters in this book, two sisters, and some others. But that was spoiled by idiotic sexism in the second sub-plot of the book, the politics of child bearing.
