it was ok

This is a book club choice. Had heard author was very good. Remember reading Alias Grace years ago and enjoying it.

But this was awful. So boring at times I just couldn't go on. But I plodded through what at times seemed almost cliched monotony.

It seemed as if Atwood had several different story line ideas and drums to beat ( none of which is described with any depth of knowledge) and couldn't decide what to choose so she put them all in.

Future hybrid animals from scientific experimentation, computer games and creationism, pedophilia and selling children into prostitution, the master race, the apocalypse, just to name a few. Lets chuck in some global climate warming and mass biological genocide for good measure.

The whole thing seemed like a big mishmash to me and didn't gel together at all

There was no depth to any of the characters and no explanation as to the how and why some lived in walled compounds while the rest of the world ( the plebs )continued to live in some sort of debauchery.

I couldn't see a love story in it at all! All it was was some weird infatuation with a computer generated character. And Crakes 'girlfriend' ( who apparently had been sold by her parents into child prostitution) looked like her so Jimmy thought he was in love! No romance just sex with the woman who idolised his weird best mate!

I just found the whole thing stupid. A trilogy? I hoped the pigoons had got the snowman and that would have been the end of it.
