Ruth only nearly died twice in this one (falling off precipice and, AGAIN, potential panther attack....please note that Ruth has almost been killed TWICE by a panther in the space of one summer vacation, once on the East Coast, once out West. Do NOT hang out with Ruth.).

So, Jane Ann (shortened to Ann....I don't understand why everyone hates her name so much) comes East to go to boarding school with Ruth and the gang. Train crashes. Zoo animals escape (hence the panther). Jane Ann is fine, saved by a boy on the run (lots of boys on the run in these books...see SNOW CAMP). Ruth takes an interest (like she does) and, naturally, the father one of her school chums (what happened to the word "chum"....now we only use it for shark bait) has just purchased the very island from which boy on the run had to run.

Oh, and the gang gets lost in the snow again, as in SNOW CAMP. Ruth Fielding is a jinx, I tell you.

Edited to add: I'm giving poor Ruth a hard time, but I must admit that I admired this quote, "There is nothing so cruel as a schoolgirl's tongue when it is unbridled. And unless the victim is blessed with either a large sense of humor or an apt brain for repartee, it goes hard for her." (50). Nice to see that being a teenage girl hasn't changed much between 1915 and today.
