The Old Man and the Sea, I don’t know how to describe it. Maybe I’m just not attuned to literature as others, or that this particular work of Hemingway is not as significant as my fellow readers had said. I can appreciate the writing, it is easy to read, but I can’t get over Hemingway’s inclination to let his sentences go undammed, stringing them along with endless “and”s. For me, it’s weird to read like that. Without his complexity and depth of language, I would confuse him for an eighth grader, as it felt kind of rustic in its elegance. There is also a lot of pointless rambling, but that could have come from my intoxication with modern genre fiction so that I cannot appreciate his soulful rumination. Or it’s just that I plainly hate this book and can’t give a good criticism because it’s written by ****ing Hemingway. I just don’t know. Like I said, I can’t describe it.
