This is a huge volume of poetry and probably not meant to be read straight through, but that's what I did. Some of them I didn't like or understand, but there were many that I thought were beautiful and perfectly suited to my feelings. I think that's the way with most poets and their readers. After reading, I was left in wonder about this strange and reclusive woman who saw only a handful of her poems published before her death. She never knew she would be a success, never knew her poems would be loved by millions of people, and never knew she would be considered one of the greatest American poets.

Emily Dickinson
A Word is Dead

A word is dead
When it is said,
Some say.

I say it just
Begins to live
That day.”

Amy I was thinking of Emily this weekend. She is described by one of her correspondents, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, as being an extremely exhausting person to be around. He said of her, "I never was with anyone who drained my nerve power so much." Anyhow, I have a friend who affects me similarly because of her overabundance of enthusiasm on every subject. I often wonder how the two of them would get along.

7jane I read this book during breaks at one of my jobs. It's definitely one of my 'desert island books'. :)

Loretta Very well said Duane! Having just recently read a collection of her poems myself, I found what you said to be true. So sad that she didn't live long enough to see her success!

Markus Yes, she still is my favorite. I read the same edition in one go, stuck post-it's on my favorite pages and keep reading them over again regularly

Sara She is amazing and I have also wondered how she would marvel at her name being one of the most respected in American literature.

Cheri Lovely review, Duane, just the reminder to pause and reflect on her poems is a gift.
