I liked The Princess Bride, but not as much as I expected myself to like it.
This is different from usual books that I read. It's a retelling of a not-so-well-known story. William Goldman explains throughout the novel why he chooses to exclude some parts, and keep others. This was the part that I didn't really like. It's a great explanation, but I don't need/want to know that. I'll just stick with the story. Because the original Princess Bride story was a satire, weird things happen, and it's cool. I like that, but then again, another thing that I didn't like was that it was wayyyyy too easy to guess who the pirate was. Maybe that's on purpose, or maybe that's just me, but whatever. I also didn't like like that whenever a character was dead/near dead, they were revived back to life. Sure, all the characters are great and everything, and I didn't want them to die, but it was kind of annoying.
I did really like the characters. There's Buttercup, the beautiful and charming princess, Vizzini, the "evil" guy, Fezzik, the sweet giant, Inigio, the guy who wants revenge and has drinking problems, Prince Humperdinck, the actual evil guy, and Count Rugen, another evil guy. There were others too. Since the story is a satire, they had funny lines, and yet the characters were so loveable and amazing. I like that in a story.
The story was great to read, and unlike many other classics, it wasn't so boring. Which was different and nice.
I also didn't like something near the end, which had a whole 50 page or so description about the princess bride. BORING.
Finally, a lot of things weren't explained, so I ended up wondering why those things would happen.
Overall, a great story that's a great break from other normal books. It's great fantasy read, and if you can stand some explanations, it can work too.
What a lovely unique story though.
