it was amazing

by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a tremendous piece of literature. It's not an easy read. You're not going to turn its pages like you would the latest John Grisham novel, or The DaVinci Code. You have to read each page, soaking up every word, immersing yourself in the imagery. Mr. Marquez says that he tells the story as his grandmother used to tell stories to him: with a brick face. That's useful to remember while reading, because that is certainly the tone the book takes. If you can get through the first 50 pages, you will enjoy it. But those 50 are a doozy. It's hard to keep track of the characters, at times (mainly because they are all named Jose Arcadio or Aureliano), but a family tree at the beginning of my edition was helpful. The book follows the Buendia family, from the founding of fictional Macondo to a fitting and fulfilling conclusion. The family goes through wars, marriages, many births and deaths, as well as several technological advances and invasions by gypsies and banana companies (trust me, the banana company is important). You begin to realize, as matriarch Ursula does, that as time passes, time does not really pass for this family, but turns in a circle. And as the circle closes on Macondo and the Buendias, you realize that Mr. Marquez has taken you on a remarkable journey in his literature. Recommended, but be prepared for a hard read.

Tina Haapala Brian, I think you've inspired me to pick it back up...umm soon. It really is an amazing story.

emily c. I read the first 50 pages (well, roughly 50 pages) three times because I thought if I didn't I'd be confused with the characters for the entire book. Apparently, more characters appear as I went beyond 50 pages and my confusion dwindled, though the similar names are a bit difficult. But, this is indeed a book for solitary reading; gratification is gradual but nonetheless wonderful.

Natalie Totally agree, this book is an absolute masterpiece and had me gripped immediately. I would happily say its one of my favourite books ever!

Anibal it's so so so so SO easy to read in Spanish...

Q-Laura Zarate I agree with Anibal. It was easier in Spanish. I'm reading it in English now and I don't feel the same connection. I'm from Colombia so the book has a historical significance to me related to the Banana Industry massacre. The book also describes perfectly that region of our country.
I have read many other "classic" books and didn't get what was all the fuss about them. Maybe they were interesting in their time.

Juliana I agree with Q-Laura, she couldn't have said it better.

Emranul Haque thank you brian. You wrote that i thought.

Miquel Reina For me this is a Matserpiece too!

Aretha I am 149 pages in so I'm definitely hooked....

Kevin Ansbro Superb review, Brian.
Like Rushdie's Midnight's Children, it's not an easy read. But for lovers of fantastical prose, it's well worth the effort!
