This is possibly the worst book I've ever read. I don't even want to give it one star
For one, I hated the narration. Narrating a book from the perspective of a 5-year-old is a bad idea, anyway. But, on top of that, the way Jack spoke wasn't even consistent. He didn't grow up around children, so what was with all the childish jibber-jabber that sounds even more childish than that of someone the age of five? He grew up around the mother--that's it. On the flip side, he would show signs of very adult-like clarity by knowing about things no five year old would know.
Also, the grammar was atrocious. That didn't have to happen. It wasn't as if Jack was supposed to be writing the book. It could have at least used proper punctuation. If you're going to publish a book, write correctly. This book just seemed sloppy and lazy.
Worst of all, nothing compelling was offered. Donoghue did nothing to suck you in. We could have at least got a brief flashback of how the mother came to be there. But, no, we had to read this book from Jack's point-of-view.
I don't want to spoil what happens, but just let me say that in one word: Nothing. The book is dry, vacant, poorly written, unimaginative, and boring. Jack was annoying; the mom was annoying. I didn't care about either of them; and, that's pretty bad considering the book starts out with the both of them in a horrific circumstance. Despite that, Donoghue somehow manages to make me not give a rat's ass about what happens to them.
This book, to me, is just awful. Are we really to a point where readers are so bored with contemporary fiction that they'll accept anything that's different as something good, even when it's not?

"This book is awful. The narration is inconsistent, even for being narrated by a 5 year old. The grammar is terrible. Does this mean the kid supposedly write it, too? I don't care about the kid or the mother. I'm not interested in knowing what happens next. And, there's nothing about the writing that impresses me at all. I must trudge through this garbage, though."

"This book is awful. It is inconsistent in speech and grammar even for being narrated by a 5 year old. And does the incorrect grammar mean the kid is writing it, too? I don't care about the kid, the mother, nor am I interested in seeing what happens. There is nothing compelling or interesting about this book. I hate it."
