Gilead (Gilead, #1)

Incredible. I had tears streaming down my face through the last 10 pages (not because it's tragic, so don't get that impression), but because it was so beautiful, tender, and redemptive. The story is rich and true, the characters real, the themes both sweeping and intimate. An old man is writing his memoirs for his very young son to read after he passes from this earth. The narrative blends stories from the father's past and family heritage with events that are happening at the moment, drawing connections and conclusions, making discoveries, and exploring questions as he goes. It's the kind of work any child would treasure having from a parent, and as a reader, I wanted it to be real. I wanted there to be a little boy who would grow up to inherit this treasure from the father he was too young to know.
