If you thought this book was good, I'd like to point you towards some truly great literature:
For a well-written WW2 story about a girl and a hiding man, I recommend Summer of My German Soldier. It's well-written, with characters who develop throughout the course of the events, and social injustices are evoked without being spelled out for us. Liesel doesn't grow, although things happen to her. Death keeps telling us what to think.
For well-written foreshadowing by an omniscient narrator, try Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold.
