Let me start off saying that I didn't love this book. I think it was a very readable book but I just didn't love it. I also think my issues with this book are different than a lot of the other reviews I've seen on it. That's mainly why I gave it four stars because I felt like it was a good book and my issues are probably personal things that I don't like.
Pros:
I like Lena a lot. I thought that even though she was a lot younger than I am and her life was a lot different than what we live today, I still can completely relate to her and understand the struggle that she dealt with on a daily basis. For example, without giving away any of the plot, the part where she went to the crypt and the reasoning behind it completely broke my heart and I felt all the emotions with her.
The storyline in this book was also very interesting. I felt like it was so different from any other book I've ever read. That is what kept me turning the pages. I had to know what was going to happen and how they were going to overcome what they were facing.
My last point is also going to be in my con list, but I didn't want to push aside how amazing of a writer she actually is. She has a way with descriptions that makes you see exactly what she was seeing while she was writing it. That's a true talent.
Con:
Alex. I'm the type of person that "falls in love" with characters, and with him, I just didn't. I'm not really sure why, to be honest. Maybe it was his mysteriousness, or the fact he barely spoke and she did all the talking. He didn't comfort her through a lot of what she was going through, and maybe that's the point of him that's supposed to stand out, but I just did not connect with him.
Their relationship was odd. I don't know if it's the teenage thing or how they grew up, but it was just a strange relationship.
And lastly, while she is incredible at describing things, there was too much of it there. There would be a whole page describing a place, one paragraph of dialog, and then more descriptions. I felt like it was fluff, maybe to make the story longer? I don't know, but I found myself zoning out through some of these just trying to get back to the story.
Overall, I did enjoy the book. I had trouble with some of it, but once you get through that, it is an interesting story.
I also want to mention the ending. I was floored. Heartbroken. Traumatized. And just all around WTF! Thankfully I bought the whole series because I'm ready for the next book! What an ending
