it was ok

While MK writes in her usual hilarious manner, this novel touched on the very serious topic of drug/alcohol addiction. It was interesting and most definitely entertaining but I felt that she pigeonholed Rachel's character to an irritating degree. The psychological analysis of Rachel's childhood was far too pat and I didn't believe that she could so readily accept her tenure as an addict. I enjoyed this book mainly for MK's typical sharp wit and rollicking anecdotes but overall I believe that this novel of hers is my least favorite.

Voula (otl1987) Now that's a serious review! I hate reading negative reviews without any logical explanation in them. Yours was respectful of the work the author did and I actually understood and accepted the reasons of your rating! Thank you!

Loraine Interesting. I think the idea that her childhood analysis was too pat is a large part of why such traumas get buried, overlooked, and fester. Like Rachel, we tend to roll our eyes and get annoyed with the trendy psychobabble, so it never gets truly explored. Rachel's childhood trauma was also contrasted with Misty's, who had a far more traumatic childhood. But I felt the point was made that both are legitimate, as they both ended up as addicts. It's probably harder for the addict that can't point to a headline-worthy trauma as the reason for their downfall, and the book spends some time showing how Rachel struggles with the urge to blame a thing in order to avoid taking responsibility for her life.
