I like novels about artists and paintings. This one was like Girl with the Pearl Earring
except it was the history of a fictional painting through the generations while the GWPE was about the creation of an actual Vermeer painting. They both gave me the same feeling (which I can't describe but it's nice).
The writing was beautiful but confusing because each chapter was a new time period in the life of the painting. Almost a collection of short stories.
