it was amazing
bookshelves: esperanto

This book is awesome. It's originally in Basque, by famous Basque author Bernardo Atxaga (pen name of Joseba Irazu Garmendia). His books have been translated into 30+ languages, this one into about a dozen -- and I don't think English is one of them yet! The Esperanto version was translated with the help of the original author and, other than the Spanish version, is the only version translated directly from the Basque (all the others are translations of translations).

The title, in English, would be Memoirs of a Basque Cow. And it's exactly what the title says! The premise is great: You're reading the internal thoughts of a cow. Actually, you're reading the conversation between a cow (which is pretty dumb) and its internal conscience (which is smarter and urges the cow on to do the right things). That alone made the book awesome, but as I read further it turns out that this cow is living through an important historical period in Spain's history. So, not to give too much away, the book is able to be commentary about historical events ... as seen through the eyes of a cow, who lived through it :)

I love this book so much, I would like to own a copy of the original Basque. (Plus, who doesn't love a language with so many X's?)
