The Help by Kathrynn Stockett takes place in the South in the 1960s. Skeeter Phelan, a white farmgirl, decides to write a book about black maids and their experiences with their white ladies. The book sheds some light on what black people had to go through without being too graphic. Stockett portrays her characters in the book as real people instead of fake robots that no one can relate to. One character I didn't like is Hilly. I wanted to slap her into the next century but her behavior adds to the way that white people back then looked at others who were different than them. The black maids nearly broke their backs trying to please their white bosses and then the white bosses come around and accuse the maids of theft. This behavior made me feel sorry for the black maids but Stockett created her characters to have strength to get through those tough times. Overall a really good book and I am looking forward to what Stockett comes out with in the future.
